What 1,000 pcs MOQ really means for a first cosmetics order
MOQ is not one number. It is the sum of filling line minimums, packaging minimums and material minimums — and each one can be negotiated separately.
A quotation that says “MOQ 1,000” is usually quoting the filling line, not the whole chain. Understanding the three minimums helps you negotiate a first order that does not sit in a warehouse for a year.
The three minimums behind the number
- Filling line: cleaning and setup time per SKU
- Packaging: bottle, pump, cap and carton print runs
- Raw materials: active ingredients and fragrance sold in fixed drum sizes
Where there is room
Packaging is usually the most flexible. Choosing a stock bottle and a stock cap can cut the packaging minimum dramatically; a custom mould is what pushes the first order to 10,000 pcs or more.
A smarter first order
Instead of five SKUs at 600 pcs each, launch two SKUs at 1,000 and use the remaining budget on photography and sampling. You will learn more from two products that can be reordered than from five that cannot.
